Sundance seems to have spawned an online film festival recently, which announcement I missed. It contains a handful of flash

I believe, by and large, the collection holder owns the rights to a given original work of art. At any rate, in the case of paintings, the rights are presumed to travel with the title to the object per se.
And, yes, this does lead to squabbles over royalties due on the reproduction of photos which include a given painting.
