Eggcellent

My best friend is a good Jewish girl, but she tells me she always enjoyed Easter festivities. I'm sure as kids we must have shared our chocolate bunnies with her.

Lots of people have asked me what we're doing for Easter. I came up with the egg-dyeing because it sounds so dull to say "We're not doing anything." When I was a kid, Easter was predictable as the tide: Sunday dress, church, brunch with relatives, ham, Easter grass, chocolate. I don't miss these things exactly, but sometimes it's hard to relinquish ritual.

At any rate, when I mentioned I was going to color some eggs today, she said, "Tell E. it won't hurt him to color some eggs. Oh, and if you do? Take photos." So here:

(She doesn't read this site, so if anyone knows any reputable services where I can get digital photos made into actual Kodak prints, let me know.)

Lovely. I am now wishing that I'd colored some eggs this weekend. I always loved making up the dye and letting the eggs bathe and then seeing their shells go from white to deeper and deeper hues. I always hated for them to be cracked and eaten afterwards.
But, they do get old and smelly if you leave them hanging around for too long.
Do the cats go after them? I bought some beautifully painted Ukrainian eggs from a thrift store a few weeks ago. Most were blown out but one actually still had the egg inside (I guess it was aged to the point where there was no smell anymore, because it didn't stink). The cat attacked it, ended up breaking ALL of the eggs (lucky they were cheap) and refused to relinquish the greenbrown moldified contents. I finally pried it away from his paws and chucked it.

Eww! Old eggs with dried up stuff inside? If I were you I would complain to that thrift store. "You sold me eggs with gunk in them! This is an outrage! I'm calling public health!" Hmm...well, so much for the spirit of Easter.

The easiest way I've found to print digital photos is through iPhoto on the Mac. Just import the photo, pick which ones you want as prints, enter the credit card, and you're done - they're mailed in two or three days. Super easy.
